| Opmerkingen |
Canadian merchant scrip from this period was a direct response to the chronic shortage of low-denomination Dominion currency in rural Quebec. Jos. Plamondon's store token functioned as a binding IOU — redeemable only at the issuing counter, which kept purchasing power circulating locally rather than draining out to larger commercial centres.
Saint-Césaire was a small agricultural township in the Rouville county, and general store scrip here was as much a credit instrument as a convenience. Plamondon was effectively extending trust to customers and neighbours in paper form.
