Lin'an, modern Hangzhou, served as the de facto capital of the Southern Song after the Jin forced the court south in the 1120s. By the 1260s, the dynasty was fighting a losing war against Mongol forces under Kublai Khan, and the fiscal strain was severe. Large-denomination cash coins — tally issues bundled and accounted for in lots rather than circulated individually — emerged partly as a response to bronze shortages and partly to facilitate large payments without the weight of equivalent face value in single cash.
The absence of a Hartill reference number reflects how poorly documented individual Lin'an prefectural issues remain.
