Bolivia's 1986 monetary reform was drastic by any measure. The country had endured hyperinflation that peaked at over 20,000% annually in 1985 — one of the worst episodes recorded in Latin American history. The new boliviano, introduced in January 1987, replaced the peso boliviano at a rate of one million to one. This 100 bolivianos note predates that final conversion and belongs to the transitional issue printed in preparation for the changeover, produced by the Canadian Bank Note Company in Ottawa.
