Two scrolls below the shield bear the inscriptions INDEPENDENCIA / 5 DE JULIO 1811 and LIBERTAD / 28 DE MARZO 1864, with a further scroll at the base inscribed DIOS Y FEDERACION. The peripheral legend reads ESTADOS UNIDOS DE VENEZUELA, with the weight, date, and fineness specification GR. 32,2580, the year of issue, and LEI 900 arranged around the lower field. Venezuela's 100 bolívares denomination was authorized under the monetary law of 1879, which aligned the country's currency to the Latin Monetary Union standard. The 100-bolívar piece was the highest-denomination coin struck for circulation under Guzmán Blanco's government, and production was contracted to the Paris Mint. Surviving examples in any grade are genuinely scarce — mintage across the entire 1886–1889 window was extremely limited, and the coin's intrinsic gold value ensured most were melted or exported rather than saved.
