| Beschrijving keerzijde | Printed entirely in blue, the reverse centres on a bold counter numeral 100 set within an elaborate lathe-work rosette panel, flanked by two large guilloche medallions of equal size. The whole central design is enclosed within a series of ornate engine-turned borders composed of interlocking wave and lace patterns, creating a dense, symmetrical intaglio composition. The issuer name BANCO DE MARACAIBO appears in plain spaced lettering along the uppermost margin. |

The Banco de Maracaibo was a regional institution operating out of Venezuela's most commercially active port city, and its notes circulated primarily within Zulia state rather than nationally. By 1897, Venezuelan banking was fragmented — multiple state-chartered banks issued their own currency, a situation that would not be consolidated until the Banco Central de Venezuela was founded in 1940. The American Bank Note Company held the contract for this series, as it did for the majority of Latin American private bank issues of the period.
High-denomination notes from small regional Venezuelan banks of this vintage survive in genuinely small numbers. The political instability of the late 1890s, culminating in the Revolución Liberal Restauradora of 1899, disrupted normal banking operations across the country.
