Tucumán's 1989 emergency austral notes were a direct product of Argentina's hyperinflationary collapse that year — the national government had effectively lost the ability to supply provinces with usable currency, forcing several provincial administrations to print their own quasi-money. These notes, technically called "bonos," circulated alongside federal currency and were accepted for local tax payments and public-sector wages, which is what gave them any credibility at all.
Tucumán's series is among the better-documented of the provincial emergency issues, though redemption was patchy and some denominations were never fully retired before the convertibility plan of 1991 changed everything.
