Karakalpakstan occupies an anomalous position in Central Asian political geography — nominally a sovereign republic with the constitutional right to secede from Uzbekistan, a clause inserted during the Soviet dissolution negotiations of 1993 and never removed. That legal fiction has never been tested, and Tashkent issues coins like this one celebrating the region partly as a soft administrative gesture toward that dormant autonomy.
