| Obverse description | Dark brown typographic border surrounds the central text panel on a cream ground, with the denomination '100 000 MARK' repeated in large capitals along the top and bottom margins and '100000' in vertical strips on both lateral borders. The central field, set in Gothic blackletter script, carries the issuer title and denomination, with redemption and validity clauses in smaller roman type below. The issue date 'Darmstadt, 10. Darmstadt's municipal treasury issued this note during the hyperinflationary spiral of 1923, when German cities, towns, and even private firms were authorized to print their own emergency money — Notgeld — to fill the gap left by a Reichsbank unable to produce currency fast enough to keep pace with collapsing purchasing power. By the time 100,000 Mark denominations were entering circulation in mid-1923, that sum was already losing meaningful value within days of issue.
Heedt u. Ganss, a local Darmstadt printing firm, produced the note — one of dozens of municipal issues the company turned out that year under considerable logistical pressure.
