Turkey's 75th anniversary fell in 1998, but chronic inflation — the lira had lost roughly 99% of its value over the preceding two decades — forced the commemorative coinage into denominations that would have been unimaginable at the Republic's founding in 1923. A currency reform in 2005 ultimately stripped six zeros from the lira entirely, making coins like this one obsolete within a few years of issue.
