Issued to mark the 1000th anniversary of the Hungarian state, which in Hungarian historical reckoning dates to Stephen I's coronation on Christmas Day of the year 1000 — a ceremony performed with a crown sent by Pope Sylvester II. The millennial commemoration generated an unusually dense series of Hungarian collector issues across 1999–2001, of which this is among the most substantial by gold content.
The .986 fineness is deliberately archaic, matching historic Hungarian gold coinage standards rather than the more common modern .900 or .9999 benchmarks.
