Paweł Edmund Strzelecki explored and mapped large portions of southeastern Australia in the early 1840s, naming Mount Kosciuszko — the continent's highest peak — after the Polish military hero Tadeusz Kościuszko in 1840. The name stuck despite later surveyors questioning whether Strzelecki had actually climbed the correct summit. He was also among the first to document gold deposits in New South Wales, though colonial authorities suppressed that finding for years, fearing social disruption.
This coin is part of NBP's ongoing series honoring prominent Poles whose careers unfolded largely abroad. Strzelecki became a British subject and was knighted in 1869.
