| Reverse description | The right-facing bust of Polish-born explorer and geologist Paweł Edmund Strzelecki occupies the lower right portion of the field, rendered in fine sculptural detail with flowing hair and period costume. Behind and around him, a stylized composition depicts an outline globe with cartographic grid lines, the silhouette of the Australian continent, schematic representations of native Australian fauna — including emus — and Aboriginal art motifs, evoking Strzelecki's celebrated explorations of Australia and New South Wales. The curved legend PAWEŁ EDMUND STRZELECKI arcs along the upper left periphery, with his birth and death years 1797 - 1873 continuing along the upper right. |

| Additional information |
Paweł Edmund Strzelecki explored and mapped large portions of southeastern Australia in the early 1840s, naming Mount Kosciuszko — the continent's highest peak — after the Polish military hero Tadeusz Kościuszko in 1840. The name stuck despite later surveyors questioning whether Strzelecki had actually climbed the correct summit. He was also among the first to document gold deposits in New South Wales, though colonial authorities suppressed that finding for years, fearing social disruption.
This coin is part of NBP's ongoing series honoring prominent Poles whose careers unfolded largely abroad. Strzelecki became a British subject and was knighted in 1869.
