| Obverse description | Centered eagle displayed — the Polish state emblem — with wings spread, head turned to the right, rendered in high relief against a plain field. The eagle bears no crown, consistent with the People's Republic of Poland heraldic convention of the period. The circular legend POLSKA RZECZPOSPOLITA LUDOWA arcs around the upper periphery, while the date 1967 appears in the lower field flanked by raised dots. The word PRÓBA (trial/pattern) is inscribed to the right of the eagle's body, identifying this as a proof or pattern strike. The mint mark MW appears within the design, referencing the Mennica Warszawska (Warsaw Mint). |

Polish commemorative trial strikes of this period were produced not for circulation but for internal approval and international trade — the Polish Mint routinely submitted pattern and proof strikings to currency committees and foreign numismatic agencies during the 1960s as part of its hard-currency export program. Curie was chosen for the 1967 issue to mark the centenary of her birth, a date the Polish state promoted with particular intensity given her Warsaw origins and the ongoing Cold War competition over scientific prestige.
The nickel trial differs from the cupro-nickel circulation issue in composition, making attribution dependent on specific gravity testing rather than visual inspection.
