Polish commemorative trial strikes of this period were produced not for circulation but for internal approval and international trade — the Polish Mint routinely submitted pattern and proof strikings to currency committees and foreign numismatic agencies during the 1960s as part of its hard-currency export program. Curie was chosen for the 1967 issue to mark the centenary of her birth, a date the Polish state promoted with particular intensity given her Warsaw origins and the ongoing Cold War competition over scientific prestige.
