Reversbeschreibung The reverse presents a finely detailed portrait bust of a senior Catholic bishop in three-quarter profile facing left, wearing a mitre and episcopal vestments with a pectoral cross visible at the collar. To the right of the portrait, a stylized silhouette of a second episcopal figure in profile faces left, rendered in a contrasting, ghost-like outline to suggest the fraternal dialogue between the Polish and German episcopates. The curved legend along the left border reads 50. ROCZNICA WYSTOSOWANIA ORĘDZIA BISKUPÓW POLSKICH, continuing along the right border with DO NIEMIECKICH, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Letter of Polish Bishops to the German Bishops. The composition is executed in deep cameo proof, with mirror fields contrasting against frosted design elements.

Zusätzliche Informationen

Issued to mark the 50th anniversary of the 1965 Letter of Polish Bishops to German Bishops — the document containing the phrase "We forgive and ask for forgiveness" — this coin commemorates one of the most politically charged acts of the Polish Catholic Church during the communist period. The communist government of the Polish People's Republic was furious; it had deliberately excluded the Church from official reconciliation efforts and viewed the letter as an unauthorized foreign policy maneuver. Bishop Kominek, widely credited as the letter's primary author, was denied a passport in retaliation.
