Czesław Niemen — born Czesław Juliusz Wydrzycki in 1939 in what is now Belarus — became the most internationally recognized Polish rock musician of the communist period, a distinction that made him simultaneously celebrated and politically inconvenient. His 1967 recording of "Dziwny jest ten świat" was a barely veiled indictment of social indifference that Polish censors somehow allowed through. He died in January 2004, and this NBP collector issue appeared five years later as part of a broader series honoring Polish cultural figures of the 20th century.
Mintage was set at 100,000 pieces — high for a Polish silver collector coin — reflecting the enduring popular following Niemen retains in Poland decades after his peak years.
