| Reverse description | Aerial perspective view of the Hotel Intercontinental Kinshasa, depicted as a large modernist multi-storey building with surrounding grounds and gardens rendered in fine relief. The legend HOTEL INTERCONTINENTAL KINSHASA curves along the upper periphery of the coin, while the denomination 10 ZAIRES and the date 1971 appear in the lower field. The architectural rendering conveys the grandeur of the landmark building in a detailed engraved style. |

| Additional information |
Issued to commemorate the opening of the Hotel Intercontinental in Kinshasa, this coin was part of Mobutu's broader campaign to project modernity and legitimacy onto the newly renamed Zaïre — the country had shed its colonial name, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, just months earlier in October 1971. The gold issue was never intended for general circulation; it was a prestige piece aimed at foreign dignitaries and investors Mobutu was courting during his authenticité cultural program.
Mintages were small and collector attrition has been limited, making survivors relatively easy to find in original condition.
