| Obverse description | Central field features a rectangular cartouche containing ancient Chinese seal script (大篆) characters rendered in high relief, set within an ornate decorative border incorporating traditional taotie mask motifs in the surrounding ring. The inscription 中华人民共和国 (People's Republic of China) appears as a circular legend along the upper periphery. The date 2018 is inscribed in the lower exergue in Arabic numerals. The design reflects the aesthetic conventions of Western Zhou bronze vessel inscriptions. |

Issued as part of the People's Bank of China's ongoing calligraphy commemorative series, this 2018 release focuses on the cursive script tradition — a form whose aesthetic conventions were largely codified during the Tang dynasty by masters such as Zhang Xu and Huaisu. The series was designed partly in response to institutional concern that classical script forms were losing ground among younger generations, a debate that had been active in Chinese cultural policy circles since at least the 2000s.
