This 21mm nickel pattern for a 10 Yen piece dates to the postwar occupation period, when Japan's monetary system was being rebuilt under Allied supervision. Several competing designs and specifications were tested before the bronze 10 Yen series — featuring Byōdō-in — was finalized for circulation in 1951. Pattern pieces from this phase rarely escaped the mint in any quantity.
