The sixteen-petal Imperial chrysanthemum mon is prominently placed at the top of the field. Two crossed Japanese national flags with staffs flank the upper portion of the wreath on either side. The entire design is contained within a toothed outer border with no legends on this face, presenting a purely symbolic and heraldic composition characteristic of early Meiji coinage design. |
