Reverse description Central device comprises a radiant sun disc surrounded by an elaborate wreath composed of paulownia and cherry blossom branches, tied at the base with a ribbon bow, above a paulownia mon. The sixteen-petal Imperial chrysanthemum mon is prominently placed at the top of the field. Two crossed Japanese national flags with staffs flank the upper portion of the wreath on either side. The entire design is contained within a toothed outer border with no legends on this face, presenting a purely symbolic and heraldic composition characteristic of early Meiji coinage design.
