| 表面の説明 | Central depiction of the Byodoin Phoenix Hall (鳳凰堂), a celebrated 11th-century Buddhist temple located in Uji, Kyoto Prefecture, rendered in fine relief and occupying the full width of the field. The temple complex is shown in a symmetrical frontal elevation with flanking pavilions and traditional curved rooflines, framed by stylised cloud and wave ornamental motifs. The legend 日本国 (State of Japan) arcs across the upper field, with the characters 日 and 国 flanking the central temple motif at left and right respectively. The denomination 十円 (Ten Yen) appears in large characters in the lower field, also framed by decorative foliate and cloud elements. The entire design is set within a raised rim with an incuse border. |

| 裏面の説明 | The large numeral '10' dominates the upper central field in bold relief, flanked symmetrically on each side by a spray of laurel or evergreen branches whose stems converge at the base and are tied with a decorative ribbon bow. Beneath the numeral, the Japanese era date inscription appears in two lines within the wreath. The reverse is plain and uncluttered, with a raised rim encircling the design. The illustrated example bears the date 平成十六年 (Year 16 of Heisei, corresponding to 2004). |

The Heisei era 10-yen piece is one of the longest-running continuous issues in modern Japanese coinage, spanning the entire reign of Emperor Akihito from his accession following the death of Hirohito in January 1989 through his abdication in April 2019 — itself the first voluntary imperial abdication in Japan in over two centuries. Annual mintage figures swung dramatically across the period, dropping to just 67.32 million in 2009 as electronic payments eroded demand for low-denomination coins, compared to peaks exceeding 800 million in high-circulation years of the 1990s.
