The Mausoleum of Wang Geon — founder of the Goryeo dynasty, who unified the Korean peninsula in 936 AD — was reconstructed entirely by North Korea between 1993 and 1994, a deliberate act of national myth-making that repositioned the DPRK as the legitimate custodian of Korean history. The rebuilt complex in Kaesong bears little resemblance to what archaeologists documented before the project. This coin belongs to a broader commemorative program issued around the time Kaesong's historical sites were being submitted for UNESCO World Heritage consideration, which was granted in 2013.
