The Chinese People's Volunteer Army series, issued by the DPRK in commemoration of what North Korean historiography calls the "Fatherland Liberation War," reflects the ongoing political alignment between Pyongyang and Beijing. China's intervention in October 1950, when CPV forces crossed the Yalu River and reversed the UN advance, is treated in North Korean official history as fraternal socialist solidarity rather than a strategic calculation by Mao to keep a buffer state intact.
Bronze issues of this size from the Central Bank of the DPRK are produced almost exclusively for export through sanctioned numismatic channels, as hard currency collectors — not domestic circulation — are the real market.
