Obverse description Bare-headed bust of King Ernest August facing right, rendered in high relief with finely detailed hair and a short beard. The legend ERNST AUGUST V.G.G.KOENIG V.HANNOVER runs along the outer rim, divided by the portrait. The mint mark B appears in the lower field beneath the bust truncation. The portrait is executed in a restrained neoclassical style characteristic of mid-19th century German coinage.

Reverse description The quartered royal arms of Hannover displayed on a large shield, surmounted by a jewelled crown and enclosed within a laurel and oak wreath. The shield bears the heraldic devices of the kingdom's constituent territories. The denomination ZEHN THAL[ER] is inscribed in two lines flanking the wreath, with the date split to either side below the shield. The overall composition is bold and well-centred, consistent with the high-quality gold coinage of the Kingdom of Hannover.
