The date '1959' appears in the lower portion of the field, beneath the star. The legend 'UNIVERSALA LIGO' arcs along the upper periphery. The Universala Ligo issued this piece in 1959 as a fantasy or promotional token within the Esperanto movement's long-running ambition to pair a constructed international language with a constructed international currency — the "stelo" being the Esperanto word for star, itself a nod to the green star already adopted as the movement's symbol. These were never legal tender anywhere, functioning instead as ideological objects: something a delegate might spend at an Esperanto congress or simply keep as a statement of internationalist principle.
Catalogued under Krause's X# sequence, which groups world exonumia and fantasy issues outside mainstream national coinage.
