| Additional information |
Fritillaria eduardii, the imperial fritillary, grows wild in the Fergana Valley and surrounding mountain foothills — a narrow range spanning Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. The plant has faced serious pressure from overharvesting for the ornamental bulb trade, which is part of why the National Bank selected it for this series rather than for purely aesthetic reasons. Kyrgyzstan has issued a consistent run of botanical and wildlife silver coins since the early 2000s, most sharing this specification, with subjects chosen partly in coordination with conservation messaging.
