| 正面描述 | Central field displays the Danish royal coat of arms: a shield bearing three crowned lions passant in pale, each accompanied by nine hearts, all rendered on a semé field. The shield is surmounted by a large royal crown with elaborate arched framework and jewelled detailing. No legend appears on the obverse; the design is contained within a plain inner field bordered by an engrailed outer rim. |

Christian VIII authorized a dedicated colonial coinage for the Danish West Indies in 1840, the first such issue in decades, largely to address the chronic shortage of small change on the islands of St. Croix, St. Thomas, and St. John. The .625 fineness was a deliberate step below metropolitan Danish silver standards — colonial circulation demands, and the expectation of hard use in a tropical trading economy, made fine silver impractical.
The series ran through 1847, the year before Christian VIII died and Denmark lurched into the constitutional crisis that would culminate in the 1848 revolution.
