Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in 1991 but remains unrecognized by any United Nations member state, meaning its currency exists in a legal grey zone — accepted domestically but ignored by international monetary institutions. The Bank of Somaliland issues coinage largely as a practical domestic necessity rather than through any internationally sanctioned framework.
