Reverse description The nickel-plated steel centre presents a finely engraved left-facing bust of Mzee Jomo Kenyatta, Kenya's first president, depicted with a short beard and wearing a suit and tie, rendered in high relief with naturalistic modelling. The brass-plated steel outer ring bears the legend '· THE FIRST PRESIDENT OF KENYA ·' arching across the upper portion and '· MZEE JOMO KENYATTA ·' along the lower portion, both separated by raised dot stops.

Kenya's bimetallic shilling coinage has existed in two parallel versions since the early 2000s — magnetic and non-magnetic — distinguished only by their steel cores. The shift toward magnetic compositions was driven by vending machine and automated sorting infrastructure requirements, a practical concession to modernizing commerce rather than any monetary policy decision.

KM#35.2 is the less frequently encountered of the two variants in sorted collections, as casual circulation made no distinction between them.
