Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in 1991 but remains unrecognized by any United Nations member state, making its coinage a legal curiosity — valid domestically yet invisible to international monetary institutions. The Bank of Somaliland has issued coins partly as a practical circulating medium and partly to generate foreign collector revenue, an economic strategy common among small unrecognized or newly established states with limited hard currency reserves.
