The Gambia Currency Board was established ahead of independence from Britain in February 1965, and this note — part of the country's inaugural issue — replaced the British West African pound at par. The decision to retain shilling denominations rather than decimalize immediately was a practical one; metrication came only with the dalasi reform of 1971, which rendered the entire Currency Board series obsolete within a few years of issue.

Bradbury Wilkinson printed extensively for newly independent African states during this period, and the quality of intaglio work on these early Gambian notes is noticeably finer than the lithographic issues that followed under the Central Bank.
