Somalia declared itself a republic on July 1, 1960, uniting the former British Somaliland Protectorate and the Italian Trust Territory of Somalia after independence. By the tenth anniversary in 1970, however, Siad Barre's Supreme Revolutionary Council had already seized power in a coup the previous October, meaning the republic being commemorated had effectively ceased to exist in its original form before this coin's twin anniversary issue was even conceived.
The .925 silver version, KM#31a, was struck alongside a base metal counterpart — the silver intended primarily for collector export rather than domestic circulation, as Somalia's economy at the time could not sustain meaningful silver coinage in everyday use.
