Beschrijving keerzijde The elaborate quartered coat of arms of the House of Savoy occupies the centre of the field, supported on both sides by ornate foliate and strapwork mantling. The shield displays multiple heraldic charges across its quarters, including lions, crosses, an eagle, and the distinctive Savoy cross, all rendered in fine detail. The achievement is surmounted by a large royal crown with visible arches and orb. The circumferential Latin legend PRINCIPES·PEDEMON·REGES·CYPRI·ETC encircles the design, proclaiming the rulers as Princes of Piedmont, Kings of Cyprus, etc.

Aanvullende informatie

Charles Emmanuel II was nine years old in 1641, making his mother Christine of France the effective ruler of Savoy as regent. The duchy was simultaneously navigating pressure from France — Christine's homeland — and the persistent ambitions of Spain in northern Italy, leaving Savoyard monetary policy caught between two competing powers. Large gold multiples like this 10 Scudi were instruments of diplomatic commerce as much as anything else, circulating among courts rather than markets.

The MIR 735a designation distinguishes this as an early variant within the type. Christine's regency lasted until 1648, when Charles Emmanuel's uncles attempted to seize control in a succession dispute that briefly fractured the court entirely.
