Charles Emmanuel II was nine years old in 1641, making his mother Christine of France the effective ruler of Savoy as regent. The duchy was simultaneously navigating pressure from France — Christine's homeland — and the persistent ambitions of Spain in northern Italy, leaving Savoyard monetary policy caught between two competing powers.
