Bank Al-Maghrib transitioned much of its lower-denomination coinage to steel-core planchets over the past two decades primarily as a cost-containment measure, as rising copper and zinc prices made solid brass strikes increasingly uneconomical at small face values. The brass-plated steel construction of this issue follows that practical shift.
