The Matale district series was part of a broader 2013 provincial commemorative program issued by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, marking each of the country's nine provinces and several administrative districts with dedicated circulation coinage. Matale itself sits in the Central Province and had been among the areas most disrupted by the civil conflict that ended in 2009 — making the timing of this civic commemorative issue, four years into peacetime reconstruction, quietly deliberate.
