The Chartered Mercantile Bank of India, London and China operated branches across British colonial territories in Asia, and its Ceylon branch at Kandy — rather than the commercial capital Colombo — reflects the town's administrative and planting economy importance during this period. Kandy served as the hub of the Ceylon highland tea and coffee districts, and the branch handled substantial planter credit.
Perkins, Bacon & Co. produced the plate, the same London security printer responsible for many colonial stamp and banknote issues of the mid-Victorian period. The "place of payment" designation printed on such notes was a strict legal matter: notes were obligations of the named branch, not interchangeable across the bank's network.
