India's International Day of Yoga commemorative follows the UN General Assembly's adoption of June 21 as the annual observance — a resolution proposed by Prime Minister Modi in September 2014 and passed with a record 177 co-sponsoring nations, the largest number ever for a UN resolution of its type. The coin was issued in 2015, the same year as the inaugural observance.
The bimetallic format was by then the Reserve Bank's established approach for circulating commemoratives, keeping face value credible while distinguishing the issue from ordinary currency.
