Obverse description Printed in blue on white cotton paper, the obverse bears the heading CEYLON BRANCH at top centre, with Tamil and Sinhala script inscriptions flanking the denomination numerals 10 / RUPEES in ornamental cartouches at upper left and right. A central royal arms vignette carries the legend INCORPORATED BY ROYAL CHARTER, with the place and date KANDY 1st Jan. 1870 below. The bank's full title THE CHARTERED MERCANTILE BANK OF INDIA LONDON & CHINA appears in bold letterpress across the centre, above a large guilloche underprint bearing the word TEN in rust-brown overprint, with manuscript promise text and the authorisation BY ORDER OF THE COURT OF DIRECTORS; a bold red SPECIMEN overprint is applied diagonally across the lower portion.
