Transnistria — officially the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic — is an unrecognized breakaway state that has maintained a functioning parallel economy, central bank, and commemorative coin program since declaring independence from Moldova in 1990. The Pridnestrovian Republican Bank issues collector coinage with a consistency that belies the territory's precarious diplomatic status; no UN member state recognizes it.
