Rybinsk sits on the Rybinsk Reservoir, one of the largest artificial bodies of water in the world when it was completed in 1941 — a project that required the forced displacement of over 130,000 people and the deliberate flooding of several towns, including the historic city of Mologa. The reservoir's creation was a defining Soviet-era trauma for the region, and the modern city's identity is partly shaped by that submerged history.
