Opmerkingen

Tajikistan continued using Russian ruble notes after independence in 1991, but by late 1994 Russia's decision to demonetize the pre-1993 Soviet ruble series forced the new republic's hand. Unable to immediately join the ruble zone on acceptable terms, Tajikistan issued its own transitional somoni-predecessor currency — the Tajik ruble — pegged notionally to the Russian ruble but backed by nothing resembling meaningful reserves.

The 1994 series was printed by the Goznak facility in Moscow, an arrangement that created an obvious political awkwardness for a newly independent state issuing currency through its former sovereign's state printer.
