Additional information

Ras al-Khaimah joined the federation that became the UAE in 1972, but in the preceding years its ruler, Sheikh Saqr bin Mohammed al-Qasimi, aggressively pursued coin and stamp issues aimed squarely at the collector market — a common revenue strategy among the smaller Trucial States as British withdrawal from the Gulf loomed. Most of these issues saw negligible circulation. The Rome mintmark places production at the Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato, which struck numerous issues for Gulf states during this period.
