Pedro III was Maria I's uncle before he was her husband — a dynastic arrangement engineered purely to keep the Portuguese crown consolidated within the House of Braganza. He held the title of king consort only; real authority resided entirely with Maria. When he died in 1786, coinage bearing the joint effigy was immediately discontinued, which compresses the entire production run of this type into a tight eight-year window across two Lisbon mint facilities.
The KM#262 attribution places this among the earliest issues of Maria's reign, struck the same year she ascended following the death of José I.
