Portugal contracted the Bombay Mint to strike this issue for Portuguese India — a straightforward logistical arrangement given the proximity of Goa to British India's minting infrastructure. The Bombay Mint had been producing coins for British colonial territories since the 1820s, and by the 1870s it was routinely accepting foreign government contracts.
Coins struck at Bombay for Portuguese India are distinguishable from Lisbon-produced pieces by subtle differences in relief and planchet finish. The 1871 date represents one of the earlier years of this outsourcing arrangement under Luís I, whose reign saw Portuguese India increasingly dependent on British colonial infrastructure for basic monetary production.
