Portugal contracted the Bombay Mint to strike this issue for Portuguese India — a straightforward logistical arrangement given the proximity of Goa to British India's minting infrastructure. The Bombay Mint had been producing coins for British colonial territories since the 1820s, and by the 1870s it was routinely accepting foreign government contracts.
Coins struck at Bombay for Portuguese India are distinguishable from Lisbon-produced pieces by subtle differences in relief and planchet finish.
