10 Réis - João V Goa mint

Portugal's copper coinage for Goa in this period occupied an awkward administrative space — technically royal issue under João V, but struck at the Goa mint using local dies that diverged noticeably in execution quality from Lisbon production. The Estado da India was chronically short of small change throughout the first half of the eighteenth century, and these copper réis circulated hard in the bazaars of the Konkan coast alongside competing currencies from Maratha-controlled territories.

Copper strikes from Goa in this reign are frequently found with irregular planchet preparation, a known characteristic of the mint rather than post-strike damage.
