Obverse description The Portuguese royal coat of arms, depicting a crowned castle gateway with a portcullis and flanking towers, occupies the central field. The crown above the shield features a decorative arch with prominent pearls. The mint letters M and E (for MoçambiquE) flank the shield to left and right respectively, serving as the mint mark for Mozambique. The design is characteristically crude and irregular, consistent with hammered colonial coinage of the period.
