In 1809, Portugal's colonial administration in Angola faced a chronic shortage of small change — a problem endemic to the Atlantic periphery throughout the eighteenth century. Rather than wait for fresh shipments from Lisbon, local authorities countermarked existing V Réis copper to double their face value, effectively manufacturing a new denomination by decree. The shield punch is the authorization mark, not a mint mark in any conventional sense.
